Matthew Friesen, President

Area of Concentration:
4Year BBA, with a concentrating in Marketing.

Why I chose to get involved with BASA: I realized that I was doing myself an injustice by not getting involved on campus.  In business networking is just as important as what you learn in the classroom and BASA gave me that opportunity to build my network. BASA is also a great chance to apply the skills you learn in a classroom to a real-life corporation.

Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: Two of my favourite things about the University of Winnipeg are the location and the atmosphere.  First of all, the location couldn't be more ideal.  Most of the city’s major attractions are within walking distance of our campus or a short ride, including: the Forks, MTS Centre (GO JETS GO!), Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Exchange District, Polo Park Shopping Centre, etc..  Secondly, I simply love the atmosphere at the University of Winnipeg.  The U of W has such a close knit student body that it makes attending this University feel like home.  Allowing many great friendships and working relationships to be forged here with minimal effort.

Favourite course taken in the Business Department: My favourite courses so far have been Fundamentals Marketing and Consumer Behaviour with Dr. Sharma and Advertising with Grant Wainikka. However, I think that Business Strategy with John Melnyk and the MIMC Competition this year will make the front of the list!

Advice for fellow students: GET INVOLVED!!!!!!!  It isn't just recruiting jargon. Getting involved by attending on-campus events and joining student groups is the best way to meet people who you will be working with during school and afterward.  My first year was so intimidating making groups or applying for jobs.  However, after joining BASA I found that I always knew at least a couple of people in my classes making groups that much more enjoyable (just about every class has a group component).  Also, the job opportunities start to flow when you really get yourself out there and network.

Area of Concentration:
4 Year BBA, with a concentration in Human Resource Management

Why I chose to get involved with BASA:
I became involved with BASA to further my business education at the University of Winnipeg. I think the opportunity to get involved during your business education is imperative as not only does it allow you to network, but allows you to use what you learn in the classroom in a hands on real risk environment. Who can say they have management experience right after they graduate with their business degree? I can!

Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: I love UWinnipeg for the great people, culture of open learning and acceptance and willingness to create exciting change.

Favourite course taken in the Business Department: BUS-4440 Contemporary Human Resource Issues with Grace O'Farrell.

Advice for fellow students: There is no better time to get involved than RIGHT NOW! It is time to get out of your shell, and dive into business council to make some great lifelong friends, colleagues and get unprecedented opportunities at the University of Winnipeg.

Nick Zawadski, Vice President Finance

Area of Concentration:  4 year BBA, with a concentration in Accounting.

Why I chose to get involved with BASA: My first year of University I came to campus for classes and went home as soon as they were finished. After going to a couple of  BASA  events in subsequent years I liked what the organization was offering and thought it was a great way to get involved. BASA has given me with an excellent opportunity to round out my education.

Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: It sounds cliché and right out of the recruitment 101 to say that the small class sizes are my favorite thing about the University of Winnipeg. The small classes have allowed me to forge strong relationships with many of my classmates but also with my professors. Because of these relationships I have been able to get advice both academically and professionally, as well as having an excellent source of references for business and future educational purposes.

Favourite course taken in the Business Department: To date, without question my favorite course has been Ethics in Management with John Melnyk. For as long as I’ve known and heard of professor Melnyk’s reputation, I had been looking forward to taking a class with him. This course exceeded my expectations and I don’t just say that because I’m taking two more courses with him this year. Having a chance to analyze a case and discuss my analysis and opinions in the classroom setting was different from any course I had taken. As long as you come to class prepared and ready to speak I’m confident you’ll have a comparable experience.

Advice for fellow students: Don’t get too stressed out and try to have fun at every chance. Your courses may seem stressful now but your first year of University will have the lightest course load so take the time to go to on-campus events and off-campus socials (like Risky Business 4 at Halloween). The more relationships you develop now, the better your University experience will be.

Area of Concentration: 4 Year BBA, with a concentration in International Business and Marketing.

Why I chose to get involved with BASA: BASA provides students with the opportunity to gain practical knowledge of what the business world is truly like. With BASA, I have been granted the opportunity over the years to manage a team, create and implement a corporate budget, throw networking events and much more experiences that are not available by classroom learning alone.

Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: The University of Winnipeg does an excellent job in assuring that a student does not feel as though they are just a number. The faculty is open to talking with and helping students in their course work and in some cases even their careers! There are multiple ways that students can become involved in the school, whether it be through academic or social student associations, there is something for everyone.

Favourite course taken in the Business Department: The 4th year competition course is an amazing opportunity and unlike anything else offered at the school. That or anything taught by Grace O'Farrell. She is incredibly knowledgeable and prepared for her classes and her shear love of teaching is evident.

Advice for fellow students: Being a student is awesome, embrace it! Get involved in activities around the campus and make friends at the school. You never know when someone can help you out in the future!

Area of Concentration:
4 Year BBA, with a concentration in International Business.

Why I chose to get involved with BASA: Looking at how much the team was involved on campus and within the Business department, I thought this could be a great tool for me to meet new people and get known among the Business community within Winnipeg. After joining BASA, I have not only expanded my network but also gained some practical business knowledge.

Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: Being an international student, I wanted to go to a university which has small class sizes, a welcoming environment and most importantly has a decent tuition fees (as compared to all others across Canada). The University of Winnipeg fit the bill perfectly.

Favourite course taken in the Business Department: My favourite course so far has been International Business with Professor S.Singh.

Advice for fellow students: Know and get known!! Decide your destination and follow the path that you choose, not which others choose for you.

Area of Concentration: 4 Year BBA, with a concentration in Marketing and Human Resource Management.

Why I chose to get involved with BASA: I chose to get involved because I saw a good group of people creating amazing opportunities for students and I thought that I could help out and develop myself as well as BASA into something better.

Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: My favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg is that it is located downtown. I love being able to walk around downtown and explore the many weird and strange happenings of Winnipeg. There are a massive amount of restaurants and retail stores as well as a pretty decent entertainment selection a good walking distance away from the U of W.

Favourite course taken in the Business Department: My favorite course taken in the Business Department so far has been Marketing.

Advice for fellow students: Keep an open mind about what you study, one day you could wake up and decide you want to be a philosopher. Stranger things have happened, don't be afraid to change your major or program. Just make sure you have a plan to graduate.

Area of Concentration:  4 Year BBA, with a concentration in Marketing.

Why I chose to get involved with BASA: BASA is an opportunity to enhance my university experience. The educational events put on throughout the year are a fantastic way to get involved and take my university education further. The events throughout the year connect students, faculty and the business community together to create a great networking opportunity.

Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg:  The small classes, downtown location and the availability of professors. Having small class sizes provides a better educational experience and the professors are almost always available to meet with students.

Favourite course taken in the Business Department:  My favourite course taken so far has been Consumer Behaviour. It’s a very interactive class and throughout the term many interesting class discussions occurred.

Advice for fellow students: Get involved early! As business students, getting involved with BASA will help further your educational interests and help form invaluable business networks.

Why I chose to get involved with BASA: Being a BASA executive is a wonderful opportunity to gain aspects of the working world. I chose BASA because of their strong dedication and will to create an environment for all students, which reflect how current Businesses operate.

Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: Smaller class sizes allow me to engage with business professors and students on a more intimate, personable level.

Favourite course taken in the Business Department: My favourite course so far has been Financial Management with Maggie Liu. I've never met a teacher who can get so enthusiastic when her students understand the course content!

Advice for fellow students: Get to know other students in the same concentration as you. Strong relationships and networking are key aspects in the business world.

Area of Concentration:
3 year BBA, with general stream and 4 year B.Sc honors in Computer Science

Why I chose to get involved with BASA: I chose to get involved with BASA to meet new people and further enhance the education of other business students in U of W as well as my own.

Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: The small class sizes are amazing. You really get to know your professor on a personal level and you are able to use that connection to get more out of lectures and education as a whole.

Favourite course taken in the Business Department: My favorite so far would have to be Fundamentals of Marketing.

Advice for fellow students: Make connections! Be the one in your class to introduce yourself to everyone including your professor. Networking is a key aspect of Business and knowing everyone that you'll be in classes with for the next few years will make your education more enjoyable.
