Area of Concentration: 4 Year BBA with a concentration in Accounting
Why I chose to get involved with BASA: I decided to run for the President of BASA because I wanted the opportunity to help promote the business degree at the U of W. I feel that with having the right connections within the business community, the U of W's business faculty has the potential of producing some of the top business leaders in Manitoba.
Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: I love the small class sizes, and the individual attention that you can receive from professors.
Favourite course taken in the Business Department: Ethics for Management.
Advice for fellow students: Do not take Taxation, Equities and Cost Accounting in the same semester....trust me, you're not that smart.
Steven Hobson, Vice President
vicepresident@uwbasa.ca
Area of concentration: 4 Year BBA with a concentration in Human Resource Management & Organizational Behaviour.
Why I chose to get involved with BASA: I became involved with BASA to further my business education at the University of Winnipeg. This non-profit organization really allows you to network with you fellow students, professors and professionals in the business community. I think the opportunity to get involved during your business education is imperative as not only does it allow you to network, but allows you to use what you learn in the classroom in a hands on real risk environment. I think this is a great experience, and employers consider it to be as well.
Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: The University of Winnipeg has such a dynamic campus full of interesting opportunities, experiences and people. Specifically what I enjoy most is the personal relationships I have built with my professors and the lifelong friends and colleagues I have had the privilege of meeting. University of Winnipeg is truly a unique and exciting place to be completing my business degree.
Favourite course taken in the Business Department: My most enjoyable class at the University would be any course in the Human Resource area. Specifically all classes taught by Professor Grace O'Farrell have been incredibly insightful and have taught me so much throughout my time in University because of the hands on approach used in assignments and the case method of study.
Advice for fellow students: Take your time, breathe, and enjoy University. You are there for a reason greater than you know, and it can be completely life changing if you allow it be.
Nick Zawadski, Treasurer
treasurer@uwbasa.ca
Area of Concentration: 4 year BBA with a concentration in accounting
Why I chose to get involved with BASA: BASA has greatly assisted in my success inside and outside the classroom through the Accounting Tutoring, Presentation and Etiquette Seminars. When provided the opportunity to serve as BASA Treasurer it seemed like an optimal way to give back to an organization which
does so much for the students it represents.
Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: I know it sounds cliché put the best part of being a student at the University of Winnipeg is the small class sizes. Because of this the professors take an interest in their students, while the students get to know their professors both professionally and personally.
Favouite course taken in the Business Department: To date my favorite course has been BUS-4111 Business Competition. I and three others were selected to represent the University in an interuniversity competition with teams from around the world. It provided the opportunity to apply the knowledge I’ve gained over my time at the
University of Winnipeg. This is one of the many excellent opportunities provided within the Business Department to gain course credit while applying the skills you’ve developed. This course is through competitive selection so you’ll need to study hard, and demonstrate more
than a theoretical knowledge to be selected.
Advice for fellow students: For my fellow accounting students take Financial Accounting and Managerial Accounting at the same time as your Intro to Business 1 and 2 courses. These second year accounting courses do not have the Intro to Business courses as pre-requisites, and this is the only way to actually get your 4 year BBA done in 4 years. However, I would still recommend taking your degree in 5 years due to the overwhelming amount of work in third and fourth year accounting and economics courses.
Matthew Friesen, Officer of Corporate Relations
corporate.relations@uwbasa.ca
Area of concentration: 4 Year BBA with a concentration in Marketing.
Why I chose to get involved with BASA: The experience and the people. I wanted to gain the experience of helping manage a company with a great mission which will help me in my future endeavors. This leads me to the people, the BASA team is a great group of highly motivated individuals all volunteering their time to better the business students at the U of W. I also wanted an opportunity to help in anyway promote our members/students, our degree, and BASA Inc.
Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: The atmosphere hands down. The U of W has an inviting atmosphere that feels like a home away from home. I love the fact that I can't walk from class to class without getting a wave from someone I have been in a class with or have met throughout my years at the U of W.
Favourite course taken in the Business Department: Fundamentals of Marketing. However, I am taking Entrepreneurship and Not-for-profit management this year and have heard/expect great things!
Advice for fellow students: Get Involved!!!!!!! Whether it be with BASA through our events or simply getting to know the person beside you in your class, you never know when the connections you make in University will benefit you in your career and life. Take this opportunity to build the Who You Know section of your resume, because you will find that this will be equally as beneficial as What You Know section.
Kate Donetz, Officer of Marketing
marketing@uwbasa.ca
Area of concentration: 4 year general BBA with a possibility of a minor in Econ
Why I chose to get involved with BASA: Being able to get involved in the department and meet people who are also pursuing the same degree.
Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: Its central location makes it easy to get to. The school also has a comforting vibe where you actually have the chance to know your profs and fellow students.
Favourite class taken in the Business Department:
Classes with O'Farrell. She just knows her subject and loves to teach so her classes are always fun and yet you learn a lot.
Advice for fellow students: Go to class! It sounds basic but a lot of students feel as though they can miss classes and still be fine. It may work for some people but you never know what the prof will say during the time frame to help you get a better mark.
Amie Warkentin, Officer of Communications
communications@uwbasa.ca
Area of Concentration: 4 Year BBA with a concentration in Human Resource Management & Organizational Behaviour
Why I chose to get involved with BASA: I ran for Officer of Communications for two reasons. First, I believed that there are a number of business students who often do not realize or choose to take advantages of the positive opportunities BASA can provide for them, and I want to work to change that. Second, I believe that feedback from business students is essential to the continued success of BASA and I am looking forward to developing and maintaining a two-way communications channel for BASA and business students this year.
Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: The diversity that not only exists, but is embraced on campus. We are surrounded by others who have different backgrounds and life experiences than ours, and this only adds value to our classrooms through the knowledge we can share with one another.
Favourite course taken in the Business Department: Contemporary Human Resource Issues and Ethics for Management – they both provide an open forum for discussion which makes going to class really interesting.
Advice for fellow students: Network, network, network! And NOT only through Facebook. Start doing this early and you will thank yourself when you are looking for a job after graduation.
Jessica Ferris, Officer of Events
events@uwbasa.ca
Area of Concentration: 4 Year BBA with a concentration in International Business
Why I chose to get involved with BASA: I chose to get involved with BASA because of the opportunities it creates to network with business students as well as the business community.
Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: I love the U of W because of the atmosphere, being downtown, and all of the different people that attend the U of W makes it a unique and awesome place to go to school.
Favourite course taken in the Business Department: Ethics in Management
Advice for fellow students: Get involved!
Kelly Opitz, Officer of Operations
operations@uwbasa.ca
Area of concentration: 4 Year BBA in International Business, Marketing, and HR
Why I chose to get involved with BASA: Being a BASA executive is a wonderful opportunity to gain aspects of the working world. I chose BASA because of their strong dedication and will to create an environment for all students, which reflect how current Businesses operate.
Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: Smaller class sizes allow me to engage with business professors and students on a more intimate, personable level.
Favourite course taken in the Business Department: Financial Management with Maggie Liu. I've never met a teacher who can get so enthusiastic when her students understand the course content!
Advice for fellow students: Get to know other students in the same concentration as you. Strong relationships and networking are key aspects in the business world.
Chris Cardwell, Officer of Information Technology (IT Officer)
itofficer@uwbasa.ca
Area of Concentration: 3 Year BBA and 4 year BSc Honours in Applied Computer Science
Why I chose to get involved with BASA: I have always had a strong interest in IT and technology in general, and wanting to get involved with a student association, BASA seemed like the perfect place to do so. The people within and surrounding BASA are awesome and it feels great to be making a difference and getting involved.
Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: All the profs are great and always willing to help, and the small classes really allow you to have a personal connection with your prof and other students to enhance your learning.
Favourite course taken in the Business Department: Ethics in Management.
Advice for fellow students: Always be actively meeting new people, especially students and profs in your concentration. Networking is so important and knowing people that share interests with you will really help you in the future. Study materials for your classes, and always make the lectures! Getting behind in readings and relevant material can cause some very difficult exam situations later in the semester.
