Stephanie Sanford, Associate Office of Events
stephanie [at] uwbasa.ca
Area of Concentration: 4 Year BBA, with a concentration in International Business.

Why I chose to get involved with BASA: I have always been one to partake in school activities and when I started attending different events BASA was hosting, I could immediately see the benefits of going to such events and I enjoyed the experience. Therefore, I was motivated to be a part of the association that provided me with these opportunities, so that I could aid in bringing these events to other business students in the future. The great sense of community and bonding that exists between executives and managers was also instrumental in shaping my decision of joining BASA.

Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: One of my favourite things about the University of Winnipeg is all the people you get to meet. From the professors to the students, there is such a variety of knowledgeable and genuine people. It‘s central location and continuous expansion are additional features you cannot deny.

Favourite course taken in the Business Department: My favourite courses taken so far have been Advertising with Grant Wainikka, Human Resource Management with Grace O’Farrell and Financial Accounting with Debbie Mortimer.

Mary Ann Rafael, Associate Officer of Corporate Relations

Area of Concentration: 4 year BBA, with a concentration in Accounting.

Why I chose to get involved with BASA: I heard of BASA from friends and decided to see for myself if this was something I wanted to be a part of. I attended a few events as well as the AGM (annual general meeting). Immediately I knew that the people that I interacted with and the environment that was there was something I wanted to be a part of.

Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: My favourite thing about The University of Winnipeg is the opportunities that are available. It’s up to us as students to take advantage of them!

Favourite course taken in the Business Department: My favourite courses taken so far have been Fundamentals of Marketing with Dr. Sharma and Motivation, Teams, And Power in Organizations with Dr. Harlos.

Advice for fellow students: Get involved. Talk to people. Network, network, network! You would be surprised with the amount of feedback and information you take in and learn outside of lectures by just putting yourself out there.

Elliot Geisler, Associate Officer of Corporate Relations

Area of Concentration: 4 Year BBA, with a concentration in Marketing.

Why I chose to get involved with BASA: I chose to get involved with BASA because of the great things I experienced through friends who were on the team last year. Everyone seemed to love their jobs and I was interested in how everything was being run. It seemed like an exceptional place to further my business experience while also helping fellow students at my own university.

Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg
: I love the sense of community at the University of Winnipeg, the closely knit campus environment makes everything about university more enjoyable which is what all schools should strive towards.

Favourite course taken in the Business Department: As this is my first year at the University of Winnipeg (I just got transferred from the University of Manitoba), I haven't had any experience with the University of Winnipeg’s course syllabus or professors. However, in my first couple of years of studying business, my favourite course has been in Marketing.

Advice for fellow students: Give a variety of things a try in your first year at University. Almost all of us tend to change our minds at least once before we decide what we really want to do. Take your time and don't feel pressured to make a decision right away. Passion for something amounts to great performance and satisfaction.

Why I chose to get involved with BASA: I chose to get involved with BASA because it provided the opportunities to meet new people, network with business professionals, further my business education and gain real work experience within the Winnipeg business community.

Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: I love the small classroom sizes, which offers a chance to get to know professors on a more personal basis.

Favourite course taken in the Business Department: My favourite course so far has been Fundamentals of Marketing with Fabrizio Di Muro.

Advice for fellow students: Go to all of your classes!

Mike Cullum, Associate Officer of Marketing

Area of Concentration: 3 Year BBA with consideration of taking the 4th year with the General Stream

Why I chose to get involved with BASA: I felt it necessary to get more involved at University, and having already known a few of the executive for 2011/12 it seemed like the perfect time to join BASA.

Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: My favorite things about the University of Winnipeg are the small class sizes and the wonderful staff who are easy to talk to and very willing to help in any way that they can.

Favourite course taken in the Business Department: My favorite course would have to be Fundamentals of Marketing because of the competition we had in our class, and the freedom I had to lead my team throughout the term.

Advice for fellow students: My advice for fellow students would be to get involved on campus with different groups (I also help out with the German Christmas market -- having taken German as a Humanities requirement), and don't let others discourage you!

Why I chose to get involved with BASA: I choose to get involved with BASA because it gives the opportunity for students to come together and network with the local business community which allows for students to gain knowledge that can benefit them in the future.

Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: I love the atmosphere at The University of Winnipeg as well as the very diverse group of individuals that attend. With small classroom sizes, it is easy to interact with fellow students which make it a very enjoyable experience.

Favourite course taken in the Business Department: My favourite course so far has been Ethics in Management.

Advice for fellow students: Enjoy your university experience! Although it can be overwhelming at times, getting involved with students and professors allows for you to build relationships which can create opportunities in the future.

Matthew Waldner, Associate Officer of Communications
matthew.w [at] uwbasa.ca
Area of Concentration: 4 year BBA, with a concentration in Marketing or Accounting.

Why I chose to get involved with BASA: After completing my first two years at U of W, I found myself wanting to take my university experience to the next level.  BASA affords me the opportunity to not only build my own network but to also leave a better future for the next generation of students.  BASA is a fantastic opportunity to use the skills you learn in the class room and incorporate them in the real world.

Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: Quite simply, it’s the attitude.  The University of Winnipeg is growing like never before with wonderful buildings such as the Buhler Centre being a prime example.  The enthusiasm shown by students and faculty makes coming to school every day an enjoyable experience.

Favourite course taken in the Business Department: Fundamentals of Production and Operational Management taught by Brian Rodgers.  This course teaches you important skills such as scheduling and time management that can be related to real life.  The Pro Sim game will challenge your problem solving capabilities.  Mr. Rodgers is one of the most accessible professors on campus and makes sure that all of your questions are answered in a timely fashion.

Advice for fellow students: Have a plan. University will overwhelm you if you do not properly balance studying, working and socializing. At the end of the day, your grades and network connections will ultimately decide how successful you become. Always make sure that your best days are ahead of you.

Andrew Kussy, Associate Officer of Corporate Relations

Area of Concentration: 4 Year BBA, with a concentration in Marketing.

Why I chose to get involved with BASA: I chose to get involved with BASA because of the opportunities not only to expand my experiences and opportunities both within the University and the business community, but also to be able to provide other students with memorable experiences that will help them make educated decisions on their course and concentration selection. I hope that throughout my time in BASA I can gain some real world business experience before graduation, while also working hard to make valuable contributions to the University of Winnipeg's business student population.

Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: Without a doubt it is the small class sizes. Everyone says it, but the opportunity to make connections with fellow students and faculty members is one of the best things about the University. It's great to walk through the halls and always see familiar faces, and the chance to be able to seek personalized help from your professors is such an asset to University of Winnipeg students.

Favourite course taken in the Business Department: Advertising with Grant Wainikka

Advice for fellow students: Use your group assignments as an opportunity to make some connections with other students in the Business department. It will make your assignments easier to complete, and chances are that you will have a class with these people again down the road. It never hurts to know some people in the department, especially when it comes time to search for used textbooks.

Marlo Hudson, CSR Associate Officer
marlo [at] uwbasa.ca
Area of Concentration: 4 Year BBA, with a concentration in Marketing and Human Resource Management

Why I chose to get involved with BASA: I chose to get involved with BASA to have a better involvement with the business student body. It is a great opportunity to meet new people, especially possible future employers.

Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: I love the small class sizes in the university. You are able to have class discussions, and you get to know your professors on a more personal level.

Favourite course taken in the Business Department: Compensation and Benefits with Grace O'Farrell and
Not-for-Profit Management with Satyendra Singh

Advice for fellow students: Get involved! I'm in my fourth year of university and this is my first time being involved with anything at the University of Winnipeg. It is easier to meet new people, make new friends, and know what is going on in your school.

Daniel Whaley, Social Media Expert
daniel [at] uwbasa.ca
Area of Concentration: 4 Year BBA, with a concentration in Marketing and Human Resource Management

Why I chose to get involved with BASA: Getting involved with BASA has allowed me to realize the importance of connecting with like-minded students who share a passion for enriching their educational experience, and network with Winnipeg's business community. In today's world, it is not only what you achieve on paper, it is also important to be involved in your community to get a broad perspective your direction in life

Favourite thing about the University of Winnipeg: My favourite aspect about the University of Winnipeg is its small class sizes. This has allowed me to focus on my studies with the care and attention from a professor that actually remembers my name

Favourite course taken in the Business Department: Advertising with Grant Wainikka. By having such an influential member of the Western Canadian advertising industry teach the course material, we had first-hand knowledge of what does and doesn't work in the real advertising world, not just in the textbook.

Advice for fellow students: Take the first step and get involved with BASA in any way you can! Whether it's attending an event, or joining the team; the possibilities are endless. It will make your time spent at UWinnipeg more memorable and it will help you to apply the concepts learned in class before you even leave school
